Help... DENTIST?

sooo... Im going to the dentist and im getting my teeth cleaned and i havent been since i was little and i dont remember, What do they do??
And does it HURT?
help me please!!
Answer:
Well if it has been that long since you had your teeth cleaned it may take them a while. THey will probably do x-rays and then the dental tech will start scraping all the hardened plaque off of your teeth. Since you did not keep up with your routine cleanings every 6 months it may take them a while to clean your teeth. Once the dental hygenist is done the dentist will come in and check your teeth for cavities or other problems. If you have any cavities or things that need to be taken care of they will set that up for another appointment. Getting your teeth cleaned does not really hurt but they can hit a tender spot once in a while. If it has been that many years without seeing a dentist they may even split your cleaning up in to two separate sessions so it doesn't bother you so bad. Once you get done with the cleaning IMMEDIATELY stop at the receptionist desk and schedule another cleaning for 6 months. If do this BEFORE you leave the dentist office you get back on schedule with getting your teeth cleaned and checked every 6 months.
Having your teeth cleaned shouldn't hurt. If you have way too much buildup you may need a deep cleaning in this case your gums may be very sensitive so the cleaning may need an anesthetic if this is required. They will have you bite on some film to check for cavities between your teeth that they can't see, check all your teeth for cavities by looking at them and pressing on them a little, normally they scale teeth it sounds bad but normally doesn't hurt, and then polish them shiny. It should be fine.
you don't say how old you are...there are different intensities of cleaning that correspond to different stages of dental health...cleaning for cavities can be nerve-wracking but probably won't hurt...if this is all that's wrong with you, consider yourself fortunate...cleaning to address gingivitis would involve anesthetic (I don't mind needles, but I'm not the norm)...often it would involve something called "root planing" where the dentist lifts up under the gums to get at your roots...usually it takes more than 1 visit...do some here, do some there, maybe 2 visits, and you get antibiotics as a precautioncleaning to address periodontal disease is a major process...your roots are exposed because plaque has been allowed to build up and eats away the protective coating of the tooth...if you've had cysts, you probably have periodontal disease...if I were you, I'd take everything I have, aspirin, Tylenol, prescription and whatever you have on hand plus the product advertised on TV that makes tooth pain go away, and also brush with Denquel or other toothpaste for sensitive teeth...the metal drills have generally been replaced with high-speed sonic devices, so you don't hafta listen to something that sounds like someones doing demolition on the sidewalk...if you have time before your visit, re-post your question, including addl info like your age, if you have anything listed above...anything you add would be helpful...hang on
Hey there. No problem. Im actually looking into going into dental hygiene so Its okay!! Basically they just use one of those spinbrush toothbrushes that basically just tingles and tickles. They do your entire mouth, inside and outside of every tooth. Then they floss between each tooth as well. Sometimes if they think you might have a cavity, they'll poke around or stick your gums a little which might hurt a little, but its no big deal. Chances are he/she will be really friendly and try to talk to you even when you've got your mouth wide open lol. Sometimes you even get to choose the flavor of toothpaste. And on the way out they might even give you a brush and some floss. So really, it doesnt hurt, and afterwards your mouth feels so unbelievably clean! Just relax, and you'll be finished soon! I hope I helped! And take care :)
