How do you know if you have a cavity?

I'm not sure if it's a cavity on some back molars or if it's just darkened. They dont hurt or anything.. And if they are cavities what happens if i do not go to the dentist? I've heard they can spread, but what happens if they spread?
Answer:
A dentist will look for caries at each office visit, regardless of whether it is a routine visit or an appointment made by the patient because of pain. The dentist will examine the teeth visually and will probe the teeth with an instrument called an explorer to determine if there are pits or areas of damage. Periodically, or if the dentist suspects hidden caries, X-rays will be taken by looking at the teeth.
the sooner you go, the better chance of fixing problems
If you have any pain. you should go see your dentist. You better call soon, there could be a wait.
Sensitivity to hot, cold or a tap on the tooth
It is not always obvious to a patient if they have a cavity. You should see your dentist routinely and they will visually check your mouth and take xrays to see if you have any decay. Some cavities start below old filling and they often go un noticed by patients. Some patients will have some symptoms though and most often with decay the sensitivity is to sweet things. If you don't go to the dentist then the cavity will get so deep that it will touch the nerve in your tooth and then instead of just another filling you will need a root canal and then a crown.
Decay can spread but that would usually take some time to do that. Well and if that happens ...you will need more then one tooth filled!!
